Carnosine precursor, contrasting muscle acidosis.
Β-Alanine is a non-protein amino acid carnosine precursor, a dipeptide synthesized from β -Alanin and L-Histidine, which has been shown to act as a buffer on the pH of the skeletal muscle by helping to delay the onset of muscle acidosis induced by lactic acid. Several studies suggest that continuous intake of β-alanine increases the concentration of skeletal muscle carnosine. In addition, a positive correlation between muscle carnosine and several parameters used to measure high intensity physical performance seems to have been confirmed.
